Spook-tacular Pool Care Superstitions

Let’s creep it real, there are a few pool care superstitions floating around, but are they BOOlievable?
Chlorine causes red, itchy eyes
Chlorine is NOT the wicked witch behind your red and itchy eyes! Instead, it's the unbalanced pH level that conjures up those burning sensations. Just like a potion, your eyes have a pH of 7.4, and to keep the swimming waters from turning into a haunted swamp, maintain the water's pH between 7.2 and 7.6. This will ensure your swimming experience is more comfortable and free from the curse of red, burning eyes!
Strong chlorine smell = clean pool
A strong chlorine smell might initially suggest that your pool is well-sanitized, but beware! This haunting aroma can be deceiving. When chlorine mingles with sweat, dirt, and other natural oils, it conjures up chloramines, which produce this unsettling odor. So, if your pool gives off a pronounced 'pool smell,' it might be a ghostly sign of improper treatment lurking beneath the surface.
Use a tennis ball to clean pool water
It's often whispered that placing a tennis ball in your skimmer box can help keep your pool from turning into a murky cauldron. But beware, for this is not entirely true! While these eerie orbs may attract algae, sweat, and various natural oils, they do not serve as an effective filtration system. Instead, algae will thrive and multiply on the ball, transforming it into a ghastly sight in no time!
Chlorine turns blonde hair green
Chlorine isn't the ghostly culprit behind your hair turning green; it's the wicked copper that's to blame! Some algaecides, contain copper that clings to your hair while you swim through the water. If your little ghouls and goblins emerge with green-tinted locks, consult your potion master about your pool chemicals and maintenance plan to keep those frightful tresses at bay!
There’s no chlorine in a salt water pool
This is not true! Salt contains a small amount of chlorine, so your saltwater pool will have some spooky chlorine lurking within. However, these levels are lower and less concentrated than in a typical haunted chlorine pool. Saltwater pool systems offer a safe and cost-effective method to conjure chlorine from salt through the eerie process of electrolysis.
You can clean your pool with household cleaners
While baking soda is a great ghost-buster for cleaning indoors, it’s not the potion you want for your pool. Using it in your pool can lead to some frightful consequences!
Trying to save a few ghoulish coins by using improper pool chemicals can result in eerie stains or damage to your pool equipment. This could summon higher repair or replacement costs from the depths of your wallet! Stick to potions specifically formulated for pool maintenance and follow the recommended dosages to keep your pool sparkling and safe this swim season.
