Bring Your Pool Back to Life After the Holidays

The holidays are made for sunshine, family, friends, and plenty of pool time. While all that fun is great for memories, it can be tough on your pool. Heavy use, extra swimmers, sunscreen, leaves, food spills, and hot weather can leave your water looking tired and unbalanced.
If your pool isn’t looking as fresh as it did before the holidays, don’t worry — a little post-holiday TLC can bring it back to life quickly. Here are our top tips to get your pool sparkling again.
1. Start With a Thorough Clean 🧹
After weeks of heavy use, debris builds up fast.
Scoop out leaves and debris from the surface.
Brush walls, steps, and tiles to remove dirt, oils, and sunscreen residue.
Vacuum the pool floor to remove anything that’s settled at the bottom.
A deep clean gives you a fresh starting point before adjusting chemicals.
2. Clean or Backwash the Filter 🔄
Your filter works overtime during peak swimming periods.
Cartridge filters should be removed and hosed down thoroughly.
Sand Filter may need a backwash.
A clean filter improves circulation, helps chemicals work properly, and prevents cloudy water.
3. Test and Rebalance the Water 🧪
More swimmers mean more contaminants.
Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabiliser levels.
Adjust as needed to bring everything back into the ideal range.
Balanced water is key to keeping your pool clear, safe, and comfortable for swimming.
4. Shock the Pool if Needed ⚡
If your water looks dull, cloudy, or smells strongly of chlorine, a shock treatment can help.
Shocking removes built-up chloramines caused by heavy use.
It restores chlorine effectiveness and water clarity.
Always follow product instructions and allow the recommended time before swimming again.
5. Check Your Equipment 🔧
The holidays are a busy time for pool equipment.
Make sure pumps, chlorinators, and cleaners are running correctly.
Check baskets, skimmer lids, and hoses for blockages or wear.
Catching small issues early can prevent costly repairs later.
6. Run the Pump Longer ⏱️
After extreme use, your pool may need extra circulation.
Run the pump longer for a few days to help clear debris and distribute chemicals evenly. Your pump should be running for approximately 8 hours daily during summer.
This simple step can make a big difference in water quality.
A pool that’s had a workout over the holidays just needs a little extra care to bounce back. With regular cleaning, balanced water, and properly working equipment, your pool will be crystal clear and ready for many more sunny days ahead.
